Why Your Dog or Cat Needs Naturally Better Pet Food ?
PET FOODS: preserved naturally are not doused in chemical preservatives. They do not have an extended shelf-life, and cannot be kept on a shelf indefinitely.
SINCE 1990: many veterinarians have recommended we avoid Commercial Foods and opt for a homemade diet.
MANY DOG FOOD COMPANIES: list the prime ingredient in their product as meat. Read the label carefully. You will notice that yellow corn, corn gluten meal, ground corn, or other grains are listed as the second, third, and even fourth ingredient. This is called “splitting” in the pet food industry. Splitting is when grains, usually corn, are added and listed in its various forms. If corn is added as just corn, then the levels would far exceed the meat in the diet, and therefore would have to be the first ingredient listed on the label. By breaking the corn into its various forms, it looks as if meat is indeed the main ingredient in the food, when in fact corn is the main ingredient. Corn products stored for a long period of time can become rancid and moldy. How about your dog food? How does it measure up?
BECAUSE MANY PETS: are now allergic to grains; pet food companies have decided that a viable alternative is the potato. Potatoes can be legally used to make pet food, but some have been described as containing “varying amounts” of inedible or rotten potatoes, french fries, chips, skins, fats or oils from frying operations. According to the AAFCO, potatoes that are a “residue” of potato pieces, peeling, culls, etc. obtained from the manufacturer of processed potato products and should not be used in the manufacture of pet foods.
ANOTHER QUESTIONABLE INGREDIENT: is beet pulp. Most people reading “beet pulp” on the label assume that this is coming from red beets that we eat. However, beef pulp actually refers to sugar beets. What is going into the pet food is the residue after the sugar is extracted from sugar beets.
BASIC LABELING OF DOG FOOD: does not list the quality of its protein, or the quantity of its ingredients. There is no way of knowing whether a product that contains 20% protein derives protein from soy beans or lamb chops.
